Alone e lonely si possono entrambi tradurre in italiano con l'aggettivo “solo”. Tuttavia, possiedono una diversa sfumatura di significato: alone indica la concreta assenza di altre persone: I am alone, sono solo, mentre lonely indica uno stato d'animo: I am lonely, mi sento solo. Spesso lonely viene tradotto anche con “solitario”: lonely hearts, cuori solitari.
